America's National Poetry Month in April follows UNESCO's annual World Poetry Day on March 21, a day of recognition declared in a UNESCO proclamation in 1999.
Sadly, though some organizations like Rochester Poets have promoted World Poetry Day (we've honored it for the past 5 years as part of our National Poetry Month Celebration), UNESCO itself done little for its own day! Since 1999, there have only been 8 UNESCO-sponsored functions!
To see how terrible the UNESCO commitment to honorin poetry, visit their WPD site http://www.un.org/en/events/poetryday/index.shtml. You'll find most of the link produce to "Page Not Found" errors. And while you're at it, take a few minutes to email a letter of complaint to UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova at
